About the Tip Calculator

A tip calculator works out how much to tip on a bill and splits the tip and total evenly between any number of people. Enter the bill amount, pick a tip percentage (15%, 18%, 20% and 25% are common presets, or type your own) and the number of people sharing the bill. The calculator instantly shows the tip, the total with tip included, and what each person owes, with an option to round the per-person amount up to a whole dollar so nobody needs exact change.

How to use the Tip Calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount before tip.
  2. Choose a preset tip percentage or type your own.
  3. Set the number of people splitting the bill (leave it at 1 if nobody is splitting).
  4. Turn on "Round up" if you want each person to pay a whole dollar amount.
  5. Read the tip, the total and the per-person amounts below.

How much should you tip?

In the United States, 15-20% of the bill is the most commonly used range for restaurant tipping, with 20% often used for good service, 15% for average service and 10% or less for poor service. Delivery, taxis and salons tend to use lower percentages, often 10-15%. The right amount always depends on local custom and the service received, so the preset buttons are a starting point, not a rule.

Splitting a bill between a group

Setting "Number of people" to more than one divides both the tip and the total evenly, which is the simplest way to split a shared bill. It does not account for people ordering different amounts; for that, split each person's own items first and only use this calculator for a tip that genuinely needs to be shared equally, such as a shared starter or a group gratuity.

Tip amounts on a $50 bill
Tip % Tip amount Total with tip
15% $7.50 $57.50
18% $9.00 $59.00
20% $10.00 $60.00
25% $12.50 $62.50

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the US, 15-20% of the bill before tax is the most common range, with 20% typical for good service. Use a preset button or type your own percentage.

Do you tip on the amount before or after tax?

Most etiquette guides suggest tipping on the subtotal before tax, though tipping on the post-tax total is also common and only adds a small amount.

How do I split a bill between friends?

Enter the bill and tip percentage, then set "Number of people" to however many people are splitting it. The tip and total are divided evenly between them.

What does "Round up" do?

It rounds the amount each person pays up to the next whole dollar, so nobody needs to find exact change. The extra cents are added to the tip.

Is this tip calculator free to use?
